David Beckham hires football PR specialist, wages battle for media image

logoThe Guardian reports that, just 48 hours before he is to lead England against France in Euro 2004, David Beckham has hired a new public relations manager to help him fight "an increasingly acrimonious off-pitch battle to control his media image."

"In a bid to put the media focus back on his footballing achievements after several months dogged by torrid allegations about his private life, the England captain is drafting in a football PR specialist, former Ketchum associate director Simon Oliveira."

"Yesterday's long lens shots of Beckham in skimpy underwear on his Portuguese hotel balcony, which appeared in the Sun and Daily Star, are just the latest in a long line of incidents to strain the England captain's relationship with the British press."

"Beckham said today he was 'not very happy' about the pictures, but also not 'surprised.'" //Billy McCormac
